Naval Band Instruments up for Auction?

Update on the band instruments:  A recent e-mails suggested that those of you interested in snagging your old Bass Drum might want to keep your eyes on the Culver.org auction page (which I’ll be writing about in more detail next week).

Finding Culver Memorabilia on Ebay

Throughout the month of April we’re going to try an experiment with Ebay and its RSS feeds. From now on, every six hours Go Culver.com will search through Ebay’s listings and if it finds any items with the words "Culver," "Summer," and "School" in the title it will post them to the blog just like a blog entry with the item name, picture, and current bid amount. All of these Ebay posts will be archived in the "Memorabilia on Ebay" category in the left sidebar for those who want to browse through all of them at once.

If people find it annoying we can always discontinue it, but it seems like a fun way to give people opportunities to pick up some neat Culver items. Currently there are three auction items posted to the blog. I don’t expect there to be more than 2-3 a week (which isn’t too bad if you ask me). So if you see something, feel free to bid on it.

Thoughts?

Naval School Admissions…circa 1911

As I browse through the 1911 Culver Summer Naval School catalog over at Judi Burns’ Lake Maxinkuckee history site I’m finding some fascinating things. From the 1911 Summer Naval School Catalog, here are the admission requirements for the naval program that summer: …Read the rest of this entry…

Google Search Strings for March

As I did last month, I thought I’d post up the list of Google Search Strings that led people to GoCulver.com during the month of March. I always find it interesting to see this information because it gives a glimpse at how Google, and the thereby the larger outside world view the site and the conversations on here. You also see what kinds of Culver-related things people search for on a regular basis.

Who Owns Those Woods Anyway?

Judi Burns has a neat web site on Lake Maxinkuckee history that explains the origins of the woods between the Staff motels and the town of Culver proper.

Shine your Dress Shoes like a Pro

One thing I’ve always found funny about Upper Camp is that, while every camper is given the same clothing to wear upon arrival, they all somehow manage to find ways to wear it differently.

On the not-so-cool side of things, we’ve all seen midshipmen with poor pleats at the back of their middy, ladies with their kilts hemmed too high, and aviators sagging their trousers (I don’t list a common troop mistake because I don’t believe its possible to look shabby in that wonderful Troop uniform). I suppose some of this could be construed as personal style…

RSS Feed on Google, Yahoo

syndicationOne nice thing about publishing a blog is that every piece of content posted is very easily exported into other formats through RSS (aka Really Simple Syndication).

Just this past week I’ve added a "Syndication" panel to the sidebar so that those of you using My Yahoo, My MSN, your own personal Google homepage or any of the other popular services in the image to the left can add GoCulver.com Blog Updates to the list of feeds you’re receiving.

For example, a quick click on …Read the rest of this entry…

Favorite Naval School Sail Boat?

Of the many different boat classes to come through the naval school during your time at Culver Summer Camps, which was your favorite?

There’s nothing intellectual about this week’s GoCulver.com poll. It’s a blatant popularity contest among ships that should probably never be compared in some cases.

Are you a Laser man?

An Interlake woman?

Do all your fondest memories from Culver center around the Ledbetter? Taking out the C-Scows during first and second class period’s heavy wind?

Vote your preference on the sidebar to the right and then explain your vote over here in the CulverTalk forums. Be sure to check out our Poll Archives to voice your say on older topics. You can see all the introductory blog posts for polls by clicking here.

New Band Instruments via Alumni Association

instrument The following was just posted over in the Naval Band forum today courtesy of Stan Mefford, 1974 naval band graduate and Culver Academy Summer Trustee:

"The Naval Band is getting an entire new drumline and some much needed brass. The drumline consists of top of the line Yamaha equipment. In addition to the drums, the Naval Band just received some marching baritones and tubas. This new equipment is available for the 2006 Naval Band as a result of efforts by the CSSAA board and Naval Band alumni giving. Enjoy all of the new equipment!"

Check out the thread over on the CulverTalk forums here and leave your thoughts. This is wonderful news! I leave it to Mr. Dees and the other counselors to explain the significance of the new acquisitions. To read up on other announcements Culver has made regarding this coming summer check out our Summer 2006 Preview series of articles. It’s exciting to hear all this good news.

Better Bed Making

One of the goals I have for this website is for it to help all members of the Culver family, alumni, parents, and students, get the most out of their Culver experience. In keeping with this thinking, for the campers in the audience I thought it might be fun to start working on a collection of links relevant to the many tasks they encounter at camp on a daily basis. Consider this the first in a series of posts (hopefully without end) in which I’ll be pointing you towards resources that just might make camp a little more fun than it already is. …Read the rest of this entry…

New: Woodcraft and Specialty Camp Photo Galleries

I’ve just opened the doors on two new sections of the GoCulver.com picture galleries, one for Woodcraft pics and another for Specialty Camp shots. While the idea seems obvious in retrospect (this site IS dedicated to all Culver Summer programs after all) it took the addition of some wonderful WC shots courtesy of new GoCulver.com member amedard to spark off the thought. A big thank you to her, one of the fearless RN’s who take such good care of everyone all summer long in the Health Center, wife to a WC staffer, and mother to current campers.

So the galleries now contain over 460 images from Culver Summer Programs with 35 new additions sitting in the Woodcraft Gallery (including the adorable image you see to the left, of Major Outlaw, CSS NB ‘98, and Mr. Dees, CSS NB ‘99, circa 1994). Be sure to check them out next time you’re online. Here are some links to get you started though (you must be logged into the forums to view the galleries. If you’d like to join GoCulver.com click here.):

Somalian Pirates Strike Again, U.S. Navy Shells Them Silly

Here’s some naval-themed news for you. According to Fox News:

Two U.S. Navy warships exchanged gunfire with suspected pirates Saturday off the coast of Somalia, and one suspect was killed and five others were wounded, the navy said.

Seven other suspects were taken into custody after the early-morning shootout, said Lt. Cmdr. Charlie Brown, spokesman for the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet.

No sailors were wounded in the battle, which occurred at about 5:40 a.m. local time, approximately 25 nautical miles off the Somali coast in international waters….
