The Naval School Alumni have opened up their pocketbooks while calling on the Academy to return the program’s curriculum to its roots.

Summer 2006 Preview

How else do you explain the changes in store for the naval program this summer?

In an e-mail last week Tony Mayfield, Director of Culver Summer Schools and Camps, announced a few exciting developments for midshipmen this coming summer.

First: that some very generous alumni have provided the means for Culver to be add 66 new boats to their Woodcraft and Upper Camp fleets. Allow me to repeat that. S-I-X-T-Y S-I-X N-E-W B-O-A-T-S! Let’s take a look at these newest arrivals on Lake Maxinkuckee:

According to Mr. Mayfield, Woodcraft will be receiving 20 Optimist’s ("Opti’s"):

and 15 new Sunfish:

while the Naval School Fleet will be bolstered by…

Four new 420’s (for a total of 17):

Five new MC Scows (7 total):

Fifteen new Lasers (35 total):

and (drum roll please…………………)

SEVEN NEW LIGHTNINGS!!!!

While every single one of these additions is going to be a real boon to Culver this summer and a lot of fun to take out during class and rec sail. As a counselor, I have to say I’m most excited to hear about the new batch of lightnings being brought in.

They’re wonderful boats for intermediate sailors to "graduate" to from lasers and interlakes midway through the summer and are excellent vessels for the advanced class to start on at the beginning of the summer before moving on to the scows.

Lightnings are also able to run spinaker’s, a valuable teaching tool and something that separates the real sailers from the wannabe’s every summer.

Finally though, Lightnings are used each summer for a leg of the Communications Relay, a leg which has become increasingly perilous and borderline unfair for the naval units due to the age and disparities in condition of the current fleet.

Torn sails, broken parts, missing lines, and just plain beat up hulls have made boat and sail assignments for the leg as important as the skill of the sailers themselves as of late. Having a batch of brand new lightnings for the naval school will hopefully remedy all of that. Wonderful!
