Somalian Pirates Strike Again, U.S. Navy Shells Them Silly
Here’s some naval-themed news for you. According to Fox News:
Two U.S. Navy warships exchanged gunfire with suspected pirates Saturday off the coast of Somalia, and one suspect was killed and five others were wounded, the navy said.
Seven other suspects were taken into custody after the early-morning shootout, said Lt. Cmdr. Charlie Brown, spokesman for the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet.
No sailors were wounded in the battle, which occurred at about 5:40 a.m. local time, approximately 25 nautical miles off the Somali coast in international waters….
The battle appears to have consisted of this ship:
the USS Cape St. George (CG 71)
and this ship:
the USS Gonzalez (DDG 66),
engaging in battle with a ship very much like this one that was involved in a January piracy incident:
Hmmmmm. Can you say "bad idea"? Apparently IQ standards among Pirates have fallen. In the pantheon of terrible decisions, this one has to be up there. I’m just glad no American Servicemen were injured.
