Who Owns Those Woods Anyway?
Judi Burns has a neat web site on Lake Maxinkuckee history that explains the origins of the woods between the Staff motels and the town of Culver proper.
As she says on this page:
"In 1931 the Culver Reality and Investment Company was established by Bertram and Edwin II Culver. Through this they bought up the north shore property of the lake between the Culver Town Park and the original acreage H. H. Culver had bought and the academy sat on. This was done to stop speculators from buying it up and decreasing the outside development by other on the area around the academy. All that could not be bought up at the time was the railroad right-a-way."
My dad and I had wondered aloud who owned that land while aboard the Ledbetter last summer during Homecoming Weekend and assumed a very similar explanation. Still interesting to see all the maps, charts, pictures of the land before it was purchased and other documents over at Judi’s site. She’s clearly put a lot of care into assembling it all together. Take a second to check it out. I’m adding a link for it to the sidebar.
