Meet the New Woodcraft Director
Mr. Sonny Atkins was announced last month as the new Director of Woodcraft Camp, replacing Janet Kline in the position. Recently, Woodcraft Counselor Lt. Joe Gee (D&B-NB) asked him a few questions on his outlook towards his new role.
Q: Where are you from?
A: I have lived all over the mid-west, MN, MI, PA, OH, IN. My birth state is Minnesota.
Q: How did you hear about Culver and specifically Woodcraft Camp?
A: I have been involved with Culver for the past 5 years. I have been the outside contractor that has trained the Challenge Course (leadership) staff. I also was part of the construction of the new ropes elements, and have done the inspection of the course for the past 5 years. I worked with Kim Kickert. I have known about Woodcraft ever since I have been involved in the camping industry.
Q: Where have you been working most recently?
A: My past job was with a Challenge Course company called ERi (Experiential Resources, Inc.) We were a full service company providing construction, training, consultation, inspections and equipment. I was the Director of Training. Traveled the country training camp staff how to safely operate their ropes courses. I also built them. I also am part owner of The Adventure Center in Bloomington, IN.
Q: Have you worked at a summer camp before and if so what was it like and how do you hope to bring those experiences to bear at WC?
A: I have worked at year-round camps for 20 years. My last two camps I was the Executive Director. I have many fond memories and experiences and look forward to sharing them with my new Woodcraft family!
Q: Did you ever attend a summer camp yourself when you were younger?
A: I was a camper during 4th grade for an outdoor education program
Q: What path did you take to the Woodcraft Director job?
A: I suppose 20 years of camping experience, the ropes course and the final path of Mr. Buxton and Mr. Mayfield!
Q: What are your goals for this summer at Woodcraft?
A: For all the campers to have a safe, fun and memorable experience. My other goal is to share my passion for camping with my Woodcraft team, and learn more about you all.
Q: Any major changes i.e. athletically, militarily or anything else that you are planning?
A: Nothing unless it would be a safety issue or the staff team proposes a better solution for something.
Q: Why do you think an 8-14 year old should go away from home for 6 weeks to camp during the summer?
A: That’s just crazy! Just kidding!! Culver is a special place. The rich culture and environment it provides children and staff alike is second to none. A child can learn independence, self respect, make new friends, have a mentor, try a million different activities, and simply be a kid for his time here. It just makes sense as a parent to give your child a chance to be a part of something that is this special.
Q: If you had to convince a youngster to come to Woodcraft this summer, how would you pitch it to him or her?
A: I would share with them the abundance of activities that they can choose from. I would tell them about the unbelievable staff that will be taking care of them. I would share with them the Gold C program, the Ledbetter, the Indian lore and ceremony, the parades, nature, climbing tower, waterfront, horses, campfires, etc, etc. If they would come for a tour as a new camper, they could see and feel the enthusiasm and beauty of Woodcraft.
Q: What aspects of Woodcraft are you most interested in learning more about?
Posted by Mr. Flora at 7:28 PMA: Hmmmmm…let’s say all of them!!!! I know a lot, but am incredibly excited to learn more from my staff team.
