New Culver Academy Memorabilia on Ebay
Today we’ll be taking a look at several of the neat Culver Military Academy and Culver Summer Camps items have cropped up on eBay recently, old brochures, ads, a yearbook, and even a crazy-awesome 10k gold piece of Naval School hardware that’s sure to pique the interest of someone out there. Where all this stuff comes from, who knows? Let’s take a look (note, if you’re new to eBay you can Register Here):
“Some Pertinent Facts about the Culver Summer Schools on Lake Maxinkuckee”
First up we’ve got this nifty little Culver Summer Schools brochure up for grabs. The auction makes no mention of any date but judging from non-mention of aviation (or woman), and the black stripes on the boatsuit hats I’d say this is from the early 60’s or so. Someone out there probably knows for sure though. I’ll lave that to the talkback in the forums.
The brochure is priced at $1.99 at the moment. Could be a solid deal though I wonder how many pages there are to it.
“Crazy Awesome Summer Schools Ad: Woodcraft=For Younger Boys”
Take a gander at this hilarious old ad for the summer programs. Woodcraft offers “hikes and the lure of camp life” as well as the chance to learn to make a fire “without the aid of matches.”
I find it very interesting that the ad entreats its readers to have “dad write today” to Culver for more information. I’m going to guess this was printed in Boy’s Life or something of the sort originally. Does Culver advertise to minors anymore? How many kids are at Culver because they heard about it and asked their parents to “write away” for the catalog as opposed to being told about it patiently while eyeing tickets for a vacation gettaway online?
Part of this is probably due to the cost of camp nowadays. We’ve talked about it a bit here, but $4,000 is nothing to sneeze at. Tuition was apparently $225 back when this was run. If we guess this was printed in 1937 (wild guess) then according to the inflation calculator online at this page that would be about $3,000 nowadays. Cool little ad.
“Culver Military Academy Cavalry Prints”
Here we have a collection of 4 11×13 pre-1940’s prints of the Culver Winter School Cavalry passing in review. I think (THINK) that the forest behind them is the current Woodcraft Camp before the trees took over and they developped it further. It’s actually pretty neat having all 4 of these in one lot. The one on the bottom left is really detailed and in focus.
“1961 Culver Military Academy Roll Call”
While not directly relevant to Summer Schoolers, there are a good number of winter school people who frequent the boards and blog so I thought I’d toss up this old yearbook as well. 197 pages and in very good condition. A fun read for anyone interested in old Culver History.
“10k Gold Culver Naval School Pin”
As neat as some of this stuff might be, this is the big kahuna on the market at the moment, a 10k gold Summer Naval School pin. Would look nice on a blazer, perhaps worn as a cufflink? Either way this is for cool people only.
The auction mentions the name “Elliott Phila” inscribed onto the back of the pin. A few minutes wandering around Culver Connect trying to find someone by this name came up empty. In the whole database there are only 25 or so Elliott’s, no one with the last name “Phila” and only 60 or so “Elliot’s” (with one T). The closest result I could find to “Elliott Phila” is Elliott Waite Phillips ‘35 Cavalry. His entry makes no mention of attending summer school though…so no luck on this front.
Still, this is a very cool pin. let’s hope it goes to someone who can appreciate it!
That does it for this Culver-bilia update. Free to head on over eBay yourself, register, and then start browsing around for more Culver Artifacts. Also I’ve added a new sidebar to the front page that displays an automatically updating listing of items matching the “Culver academy” serach string on ebay. If you ever see anything over there just click on it and you’ll be whisked right away. Thanks.
