MyYearbook.com: Great for Summer Camps, Bad for Vain People

While there are several social networking sites online already like myspace.com, facebook.com, and friendster.com, myYearbook.com, a newer network (and apparently the fastest growing one online) has an interesting idea: it lets its users create social networks for their schools AND other programs they’ve been involved in. That swim camp you went to in Eighth grade? You can make a social network for it and perhaps track people down that also attended it. That backpacking trip you went on during college? Same deal. This is something new and unique as far as I can tell.
It’s also perfect for any summer camp community, any group that gathers only once a year. With this in mind I checked out the site the other day, created a profile, and spent a few hours poking around in it. All in all, I was pretty impressed.
MyYearbook.com is like a less seedy version of myspace (important for any summer camp) with a few better ideas and slicker design. I started a Culver Summer Camps discussion board, put up a few Culver pictures, and sent out some invites to other Culver people. I also tried to have a little fun…but it did not go “well” in any sense of the word.
Seeing as how I generally consider myself to be the best looking man on the planet (my mom will back me up on this), I decided to submit one of my typically hot pictures to the “Image Rating Contest” to be voted on by the general myYearbook.com population. Here’s the winning image I submitted:

There are a few separate contests you can enter your pictures into on myYearbook.com. I had to choose between submitting my picture to contests for the “hottest,” “scariest,” “funniest,” “most original,” or the wonderfully subtle “best body part.” Of course I chose “hottest.” After all, how could I not dominate the field with that jutting jawline of mine?
After I submitted the picture I noticed that I had an opportunity to vote for it myself. Seeing as how my mom once told me that only losers don’t vote for themselves in elections I of course rated my picture a perfect “10″. Might as well start off on the right foot eh?
Half an hour later I found myself on my own profile page again and noticed that I could enter in another vote for my own picture. Might as well eh? One more perfect “10″ for Mr. Flora couldn’t hurt.
6 hours later I decided to see how my studly picture had fared in the over-all voting. My vote counter informed me that 48 people had ranked my picture. This caused no small amount of excitement to well up within me as I clicked on the link to the vote distribution chart. After all, who doesn’t like being patted on the back by total strangers? Here’s what I saw:
Yes you are reading that correctly. I voted myself a perfect 10 twice, a few jokers gave me some sympathy votes, and then a whopping 27 people ranked me a 1 on the “hotness” scale. Ouch. *sniff* *licks wounds*
There was of course one consolation, and that is the “See who liked my picture” link which brings up a list of myYearbook.com members who rated me a 7 or higher. Discounting myself, that left one person out of the 50 or so who voted. According to the list my lone admirer is named “Kareeee.” She is 14 years old. She listens to “rap or idk country muzik” and enjoys wearing “hot topic rampage uhh idk thats it”. Alas, according to her profile she is already in a “committed relationship.” Bummer. We could have been something perhaps.
Anyway, aside from this ego-bruising experience in which I learned that I am at least somewhat popular among the 14-year old Hot Topic sect I’ve been pretty impressed with myYearbook.com. It’s got some hopping forums, and you can even UPLOAD YOUR OWN MP3′S TO SHARE WITH PEOPLE ON YOUR FRIEND LIST. That’s pretty cool actually.
So if you sign up for this thing, be sure to friend me up on there. Be sure to select Culver Summer Camps from the list of special summer program during registration as well so that you’ll be added to the ranks along with me. My profile page is lonely and just in the last 20 minutes since I started writing this I received 3 more “1″ ratings on my picture…..sad….:(
Oh well, see you on there.
