Culver Lingo

Culver being a military school it shares the miliary's fondness for acronyms, nicknames and abbreviations. Many of these are simply borrowed from the United States Military however there are some just plain old weird terms and names that the average person won't see anywhere outside of camp. Without a head's up on some of them one can quickly grow confused.

Terms

  • "Woodtick"-Derogatory name given to Woodcrafters, usually by Upper Campers.
  • "Chippy"-Midshipman weighing 140 lbs. or less.
  • "The E"-Awarded at end of summer to most efficient naval company.
  • "Pass in Review"-Final words spoken by Regimental Commander during retreat and garrison parades. The words are a command for the regiment to march to the reviewing line in order to be inspected by the reviewing officers.
  • "Reggie"-Regimental Medal, awarded for excellence in an activity (often intramural athletics) at the final awards ceremony at the end of camp each summer. Worn on left breast of Dress A uniform.
  • "Wherry"-Three-seat bathtube size dingy used by third classmen each summer in a variety of naval races and Comm Relay.
  • "Stuck"-put on report for breaking an academy regulation. Was a yellow slip of paper that the counselors would receive.
  • "Main Narc"-Main Guard duty
  • "Weedeaters"-this was a detail that would have the pleasure of going to the chapel steps and pulling weeds out of the cracks with your hands. This was a punishment for a rules violation.
  • "Bush Patrol"-These cadets consisted of 2 Main Guard cadets that would walk around with flashlights and check for any unusual PDA violations.
  • "Come in on a Rag"-When approaching the Naval pier after sailing, your crew would lower the jib almost to the deck to continue sailing slowly before docking. You hoped you didn't hear this term during the first class sail. Also known as a Rag Landing (Sailing Discussion in Forums).
  • "CQ" (often incorrectly called "closed CQ") - Punishment, usually for disobeying your unit or being late. CQ is when you sit in your room usually on the night of a dance and do nothing. There is a second classmen watching people in CQ and they arent supposed to be allowed to talk on the phone or anything, although t hey usually let them any way.
  • "Bathroom Duty" Cleaning the bathroom after an unsatisfactory PI
  • "Hit The Lake" This was a punishment for any kind of screwup, usually during drill practice in the mornings. The offending midshipman was required to sprint from his present position with his rifle, all the way to the closest portion of the lake, dip his hand into the water and sprint back to formation. Like you didn't sweat enough in the morning drill!
